OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT
Welcome to the Department of Oral Anatomy, Histology, Embryology and Physiology, Pt. B.D Sharma University of Health Sciences PGIDS, Rohtak. We are primarily a teaching division with established expertise in human anatomy, including gross anatomy of head and neck, developmental anatomy, histology and physiology. We are dedicated to sustaining excellence in basic sciences and clinical research and in providing the best undergraduates in dental education.
Mission
Our faculty provides classroom and laboratory teaching for undergraduate dental students. Our focus is on preclinical training and instructions in the basic science disciplines of gross anatomy of head and neck and associated structures, embryology and microanatomy. Knowledge about development, structure and function of dental and orofacial tissues is essential for any branch of dentistry as it lays the foundation for future practice. Dental anatomy is a specialty of dentistry, which deals with the normal development and structure of oro-dental tissues.
Patient Care
The department of Oral anatomy is associated with imparting of basic knowledge about the subject to the students and provides the diagnostic and specialized prosthodontics services to the patients. Various prosthodontics procedures are performed in clinics with emphasis on maxillofacial prosthetics, which involve the functional and esthetic rehabilitation, by artificial means of intraoral and para-oral structures.
Research
The department conducts an innovative research with other clinical dental departments. and medical departments. Faculty undertake a range of research topics including cranio-facial development, particularly skeletogenesis, morphological and functional development and regeneration of the gustatory and somatosensory receptors, sensory and motor control of mouth and movement of jaws, etio-pathogenesis, treatment and prognosis of various head and neck pathologies. Our work appears in high impact publications and in specialty journals.
U.G. Teaching
The course work gives students a solid foundation in anatomical sciences of head and neck in both macroscopic and microscopic realms. The department imparts didactic teaching and laboratory training on gross human dental anatomy, embryology and oral histology to the undergraduates of BDS first year. An in depth knowledge of the subject is provided to the students by which they appreciate the normal development, morphology, structure and functions of oral tissues, variations and clinical co-relations.
