The department has an aim to impart scientific knowledge of basic principles of science of biomaterials, the ability to understand the characteristic properties of dental materials and the techniques of their manipulation to achieve most favourable properties for long term clinical success. We deal with the teaching of BDS 1st and 2nd year; introduce them to the professional course to lay a sound foundation. We provide a very amicable learning environment to the students. Our teaching focuses on the overall personality development thereby producing confident, empathetic and morally responsible doctors for the society.
OVERVIEW OF THE DEPARTMENT
The science of Dental Materials is a speciality of dentistry that amalgamates the knowledge of biology, chemistry, metallurgy, mechanics and physics in the development, advancement, testing and evaluation of materials used for various dental treatments. The speciality has major impetus on relating the material composition, manipulation and properties to their clinical performance to recognize their advantages and clinical shortcomings. These clinical imperfections act as recommendations to make required improvements in the existing materials and development of newer materials to meet the requirements of dentists/patients resulting in higher clinical success rates. Faculty in our department provides theoretical and practical teaching to undergraduate dental students to make them accustomed with all the existing dental materials. The department imparts comprehensive and in depth teaching and hands-on preclinical laboratory training on various dental materials.
Mission
The main educational goals of the department are to provide undergraduate students with: • A scientific understanding of the principles of science of dental materials • Ability to critically assess the characteristics of existing dental biomaterials and be able to make best possible selections for clinical use in patients’ interest Understanding the importance of materials manipulation to attain best possible properties for clinical success and longevity.
Patient Care
The department of Dental Materials is mainly concerned with conveying the basic knowledege of subject of Dental materials to the first and seconf year students. The department also provides the diagnostic and specialized services in the domain of Periodontology and Prosthodontics
Research
The department research projects in collaboration with the othee clinical departments. The faculty members take keen interest in research associated with Dental composites and polymers, Dental ceramics, metallurgy, fixed prosthetics and adhesive dentistry. The faculty members are also interested in undertaking projects on improvements in dental curriculum and teaching methodologies in dentistry. The reserach work gets published in high impact journals.
